Last weekend, as a result of the Westminster terror attack, Home Secretary Amber Rudd called for the introduction of a surveillance backdoor in end-to-end encryption applications such as WhatsApp. This is despite the wide provisions of the recently enacted Investigatory Powers Act and the lack of evidence that mass surveillance using, for example, such backdoors prevents terrorism.
